Mathematical modeling

Universal Technical Systems' TK Solver Release 4 mathematical modeling tool allows engineers to crunch numbers and obtain instantaneous results without learning complicated programming methods. The package features improved graphics plotting and navigation capabilities. MathLook for Excel allows users to name each cell and preview the resulting formula.

Mechanical design

Unigraphics Solutions' Solid Edge Version 9 delivers more than 300 customer- and productivity-driven enhancements for 3-D computer-aided design. It includes capabilities to assist in machinery and large-assembly design, web publishing tools, an engineering handbook, and utilities to assist in the migration from 2-D design methods to 3-D solid modeling.

CAM software

CGTech's Vericut Version 5.0 features numerous enhancements, including the ability to export an as-machined solid model in a format that can be used in CAD programs. It virtually eliminates the process of manually proving-out NC programs by simulating the machine process on a computer. The software uses G-codes or direct CAM output to simulate milling, drilling, turning, wire EDM, and mill/turn machining operations. NC programmers can correct errors and remove inefficient motion before sending part programs to the shop.

Embedded control tools

Simulink 4, Stateflow 4, Real-Time Workshop 4, MATLAB 6, and the Control System Toolbox 5 from MathWorks allow users to develop complex embedded control systems from initial concept through embedded target deployment. Users can adopt an integrated model-based design process that replaces the traditional written specification and manual software coding approach, thus eliminating months from the overall design process.

CAD/CAM/CAE

Version 5 Release 5 of CATIA from IBM and Dassault Systemes incorporates 10 new products—bringing to 60 the total number of CATIA V5 products. The release further expands the range of applications in such domains as mechanical design, shape design and styling, analysis, equipment and systems engineering, NC manufacturing, and product synthesis. All stages of the product development process are covered for processes ranging from prismatic components and small product assemblies to complex powertrain castings, styled surface components, and complex multilevel assemblies.

Remote diagnostics

Qualtech Systems has been selected by Honeywell Space Systems to develop a demonstration system that could provide remote, model-based diagnostics for the International Space Station (ISS). The firm will use its commercially available TEAMS (Testability Engineering and Maintenance System) tool set, which provides advanced failure/effects modeling, diagnostic analysis, and model-based run-time diagnostics and intelligent reasoners. The new architecture, called TEAMS-RDS, will present a continuous assessment of ISS system health and isolate any failed or failing component for presentation to NASA Mission Control operators.
