Surface-hardening process creates boride layers

Surface Technology (www.surfacetechnology.com) offers BOR-FUSE, a thermochemical surface-hardening process in which boron atoms are diffused into a metal surface to form super-hard boride layers. The process is accomplished at temperatures between 850-950 °C in an inert or reducing atmosphere. This results in the formation of a surface layer of iron boride (Fe2B), which has a tetragonal structure and hardness values in the range of VHW100=2000. It can be applied by two main methods: powder packing and paste painting. In the powder packing method, the part to be treated is embedded in a powder form of the BOR-FUSE chemicals. For treating specific areas, special paste forms of the material may be painted onto the desired surfaces.
