Nickel alloy extrusions perform well in wide temperature extremes

Plymouth Tube Co. (www.plymouth.com) is producing custom-designed extruded shapes in Invar-36, a specialized nickel alloy. The extrusions are used as tooling components in the production of advanced composite aerospace structures. Invar-36 combines durability and a low coefficient of thermal expansion to minimize thermal expansion mismatch or the type of warpage that occurs between disparate materials and molds during the curing process. Because of its low CTE, the composite is also ideal for cryogenic applications (space vehicle components) or as a component for equipment that handles liquefied natural gas. The material's mechanical properties include tensile strength of 448 MPa; yield strength of 276 MPa; and 70 Rockwell B hardness.
