Transducer technology
A new family of compact external-mount transducers from Transducers Direct employs advanced positioning technology used by the Space Shuttle to provide accurate component positioning on industrial machinery and lab equipment. The devices are easy-to-install via a five-pin connector and offer positioning linearity to 5% and repeatability of 0.0001 in. The transducers are designed for 0.5 to 0.78 in. travel and operating temperatures ranging from -55 to +105°C. Some models are sealed to IP66, blocking out electrical noise and magnetic interference.
Avionics interface cards
Ballard Technology's new family of multifunction PC/104 avionics interface cards for embedded systems communicate over the ARINC 429 and MIL-STD-1553 databuses. The PM429-1 and PM1553-1 cards provide what Ballard claims is the industry's largest selection of features and capabilities, including general-purpose timers. A variety of input and output discretes can eliminate the need for additional boards, reducing total system cost.
Variable-capacitance accelerometer
Endevco's Model 7292-XM1 uses variable-capacitance microsensors to measure low-level accelerations in rugged environments. Because it can respond to dc accelerations, the accelerometer is suitable for measuring whole-body motion immediately after being subjected to shock motion and in the presence of severe vibration inputs. Depending on the model, range is from 2 to 10 g full-scale. The unit is a suitable replacement for the 2262 series of piezoresistive models.
Composite repair
The HCS2055-06 portable, two-stage electric vacuum pump from Heatcon is used for small- to medium-sized composite repair. The unit measures 13.75 x 12.25 in. and weighs only 13 lb. It has two modes of operation: maximum flow (0.75 ft3/min) and maximum level (28+ in/Hg). Universal power input enables operation anywhere in the world. The pump includes an easy-to-read gauge and an external filter to trap or remove vapor.
Wire and cable protection
Roundit 2000 NX from Federal-Mogul's Systems Protection Group provides outstanding protection of cable assemblies, hoses, and wire harnesses from chafing, cutting, and abrading. The material consists of a woven blend of Nomex and PPS. The non-halogenated oversleeve, which is rated to 200°C, is suitable for high-temperature bundling and abrasion resistance. It has passed the FAR Part 25 flammability test and can be applied and removed quickly and easily for assembly and maintenance.
Digital engine control
The Belgian Air Force has ordered 37 LASAR (Limited Authority Spark Advance Regulator) digital engine control systems for its fleet of 32 SIAI Marchetti SF260M and SF260D aircraft. The air force said it selected Unison Industries' LASAR because it provides significantly improved engine starting during cold- and hot-weather operation. Other reasons cited were lower fuel consumption during aircraft cruise and improved engine performance at higher altitudes.
Automated storage
The FastPic4 Pick-to-Light Interface from FastPic Systems enhances the efficiency of static racks and shelving used in aviation applications and creates the foundation for the step-by-step integration of fully automated storage and retrieval systems. The system facilitates the integration of Pick-to-Light modules, a series of multi-color alphanumeric displays that control order picking operations. The models eliminate the need for operators to travel aisles with a paper pick list selecting stored items from rack and shelf systems. A computer sends the storage system an electronic pick list that activates the modules, visually indicating the pick location and the quantity to be picked.
