Laser tracker
FARO has developed a laser-based instrument called Laser Tracker that can make precise measurements of large objects within a 230-ft range. Set up on a tripod, it operates by bouncing a beam off a movable, reflective target that is dragged along the surface to be measured. It can pinpoint the target's position to 0.001 in. By tracing the target over the entire object, the tracker compiles a 3-D image of the object as a digital file. The tracker has been used by aircraft designers and assemblers as a tool to manage parts flow and assembly.
