Software upgrades legacy systems

The System Technology Enhancement Program, a formalized and enhanced
version of DY 4 Systems life cycle management capabilities, is a
methodology that leverages COTS technology to fit within existing
military systems. This program enables the legacy avionics system
found in F-14, F-16, B-52, Tornado, P3, and many other aircraft to
cost-effectively change mission profiles and prepare for revised
external threat scenario projections. Using standard product design
modules, the program allows the replacement board, based on open
architecture concepts such as VMEbus or CompactPCI, to leverage a
COTS single-board computer or digital signal processor design.
