AWIATOR and SILENCER
The first test flight phase of a raft of subtle aerodynamic, mechanical, and electronic system developments targeted at improving the operating efficiency of future aircraft has just been completed in Europe. The pan-European work is being part-funded by the European Commission and will continue at least into 2006. An Airbus A340-300 is the test-bed aircraft. The research is divided between the AWIATOR (Aircraft Wing and Advanced Technology Operation) and SILENCER (Significantly Lower Aircraft Noise for Community in Europe Research) programs, which were announced in 2002.
