13. Airbus Industrie's twin deck A3XX

More details are emerging of Airbus Industrie's (www.airbus.com) designs for the interior of its projected twin deck A3XX. Consortium partner, Aerospatiale, is now looking at the possibility of the aircraft having a gym. The first-class compartment will have seats rotatable through 360° and fold-away tables that rise to the level of a normal dining table. First class is expected to be at the front of the aircraft on the lower deck, with business class on the upper deck with no more than six-abreast seating divided into two aisles. Aerospatiale sees all passengers having a telephone and interactive TV screens for video selection, to place orders for duty free goods, or to order refreshments. A play area for children is being considered along with a fax and PC equipped office area for businessmen.

Currently, 19 airlines are in discussion with Airbus about potential interior configurations for the A3XX. Showers are a possibility and there has even been consideration of a bar, shops, a smoking area, and mini casino. How all this will fit in with the risk of clear air turbulence is unclear. Every airline's advice is that seat belts should be loosely fastened at all times when passengers are not moving about the cabin.
