Boeing tunnels toward the 747-8
As thousands of visitors poured through the gates of the 2006 Farnborough International Airshow, only a tiny handful would have been aware that a few hundred meters away, Boeing engineers were busy flying a model airplane that cost more than $10 million to build. The 5% scale model of the new 747-8 Freighter, which complements the 400- to 500-seat Intercontinental passenger version, has undergone a rigorous test program in QinetiQ's low-speed (Mach 0.1 to 0.24) wind tunnel located on the edge of the Farnborough airfield. Built in the early 1970s, the QinetiQ tunnel has since been extensively modified and updated.
