"Super D" Chinook makes first flight

For its first flight, Boeing's CH-47SD tandem-rotor helicopter performed basic hovering and maneuvering.
The Boeing CH-47SD or "Super D" Chinook tandem rotor helicopter has made its first successful test flight, completing basic hover and flight maneuvers before a successful 1.5-h flight.

"The aircraft performed as advertised and met our expectations," said Test Pilot Jack Jordan. "The subsequent test flight program will enable us to ensure the SD (Super D) digital cockpit management system works flawlessly so we can deliver a superior aircraft to our launch customer on time, on cost, and within spec."

The Super D is the new standard CH-47 model, incorporating several significant system improvements and standard equipment. These include a fully integrated digital cockpit management system, automated flight controls, full authority digital engine control, long-range fuel tanks, and fuselage "tuning" that reduces the impact of vibration on the airframe and systems during flight. This new model will accommodate a three person crew and standard seating for 37 passengers in the main cabin, although up to 55 troop seats can be installed. A variety of additional "plug-in" options are available to configure the aircraft for operations on water or in snow, or several specialized missions such as search and rescue, fire-fighting, and special operations.

Because the new Chinook uses a tandem-rotor configuration, the aircraft can carry loads nearly 3% heavier than its own empty weight, making it one of the most efficient heavy-lift helicopters around. Continuous improvements to the aircraft have more than doubled its lift capacity since its inception. According to Boeing, the CH-47SD's high speed and large payload capability make it as effective as three utility helicopters and give it the lowest cost-per-ton-mile of any heavy-lift helicopter.

The Boeing Company has recently awarded TRW Inc. with a contract to provide a newly designed external rescue hoist for the Royal Singapore Air Force CH-47 aircraft. Designed and manufactured at TRW Aeronautical Systems in Brea, CA, the new hoist will be powered by the ac electrical bus and incorporate a 270-V dc motor to raise and lower loads of 600 lb at speeds in excess of 325 ft/min. The hoist will also feature Night Vision compatibility and a cable length display. It will complement the company's existing family of high performance 28-V dc and hydraulic hoists.
