Technology update
Technology alliance

A new alliance between two UK companies will exploit technology that will allow aircraft stick systems to adapt to specific circumstances or pilot/operator requirements through programmability. The companies involved are Marconi Avionics and Stirling Dynamics. Specific aims of their work will be development of a range of advanced active control products to reduce both ownership and integration costs for active stick technology significantly, while offering improved performance. Work has already led to development of a linked active stick design, removing the need for a mechanical linkage with performance and costs suitable for both civil and jet trainer applications. According to Marconi Avionics, the same design is also considered suitable for helicopter applications for which a different response characteristic or "feel" is appropriate to different parts of the flight envelope.
