Technology update
P&WC introduce new GA engine

Extensive end-user market studies conducted at the Experimental Aircraft Association event in Oshkosh, WI, and consultations with potential aircraft manufacturers in 1999 have indicated to Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) officials that there is an emerging need for turbofan engines in the 1000-2000 lb thrust range as well as turboprop and turboshaft engines in the 600-900 shp range, using the same core technology. Therefore the company has launched a series of concept studies for an all-new engine family specifically designed for the general aviation and small business aircraft markets. The new engine family, the PW6XX, will be developed with the goal of reducing ownership cost without compromising the reliability and durability standards of the company.

P&WC has identified aerodynamic designs aimed at minimizing parts count, engine operating cycles assuring optimal use of materials, and installation effects that simplify system integration. The technology program is being conducted with various concept designs and market studies towards an engine launch based on market conditions. Demonstration and analysis of these technologies were scheduled to be completed by the end of 1999.
