Lightning warning

The French company Dimensions has launched the latest version of its SAFe lightning warning system. SAFe systems are used by various aerospace organizations, including the European Space Center, Indian Space Center, BAE Systems, the British Royal Navy, and the French Army. SAFe has been developed to predict lightning risk in an area that the system has under surveillance. The system consists of warning/alert management with dry contacts permitting the automation of visual alarms plus sirens or procedures such as insulation from the external power line and generator startup. SAFe measures the electrostatic field at ground level at the onset of a thunderstorm, follows its evolution, and detects intra-cloud (IC) and cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning, its warning algorithm providing an operation decision tool. It can detect thunderstorms to a range of 30 km and IC and CG lightning up to 9 km away. It can operate in a temperature range of -25° to +55° C.
