Testing the Trent
-
An engine test program of the Rolls-Royce Trent 500, powerplant for growth versions of the Airbus A340, is now under way. Service entry is scheduled for 2002.
Early this year, thrust reverser tests were carried out using a special rig at Rolls' Hucknall, UK, facility. The rig replicates the engine's installation on the wing of an Airbus A340-500/-600 and the test program simulates landings to prove the mechanical integrity and reliability of the thrust reverser systems. According to the company, extensive cyclic endurance running has already been achieved at power levels well in excess of service requirements. Certified at 60,000 lb thrust, the Trent 500 will have an operational thrust of 53,000 lb and 56,000 lb. Although it is not necessary for the four-engined A340, the Trent 500 is undergoing an extended range twin operations (ETOPS) test program.
Another Trent has been installed at the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency's (DERA) Pyestock, UK, facility, which simulates high-altitude conditions (up to 40,000 ft) and allows the engine's performance and handling characteristics to be evaluated under flight conditions. First flight of a Trent 500 is due shortly in an Airbus A340-300 flying testbed, with first flight in an A340-600 set for early next year.
