TRW builds PTO for F124 turbofan

TRW Inc. has been selected to supply the power takeoff (PTO) shaft for the Honeywell F124 turbofan engine on the Boeing Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) Advanced Technology Demonstrator program. Under the terms of the initial contract, the company will supply three PTO shafts.

The PTO shaft, which transmits power from the engine to the accessory drive, was designed, developed, and manufactured at the company's facility in Utica, NY. Its unique one-piece, welded construction and contoured flexible diaphragms result in high reliability and low maintenance. To date, the company has produced more than 135,000 aircraft shafts and couplings, now flying aboard more than 65 different airframes.

The Boeing UCAV program is to demonstrate the technical feasibility for a UCAV system to effectively and affordably perform suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) and strike missions. The company's Phantom Works division in Seattle, WA, and St. Louis, MO, will design, fabricate, and flight test two UCAV demonstrators for the program. The Honeywell F124 engine, which is designed to produce 6300 lb of thrust, has been selected to power the two demonstrator aircraft.
