Composite parts for the V-22

Integrated Systems and Aerostructures (ISA), a division of Northrop Grumman Corp., has received a three-year contract from The Boeing Co. for the fabrication of fuselage skin panels and subassemblies on the V-22 tiltrotor aircraft. The contract is for approximately 12 panel assemblies ranging in size from 2 x 5 ft to more than 20 ft in length. The aircraft was developed and manufactured by Boeing and Bell Helicopter.

The composite work will be performed using the company's new tow placement machine. This device uses computer numerical controls to allow for the precise placement of carbon fibers (tows) upon rotating tool surfaces for building complex composite structures such as those found on the V-22.
