Fiber-optic acoustic strain measurement

A joint agreement was formed between National Technical Systems (NTS) and Intelligent Optical Systems (IOS) to commercialize a new fiber-optic strain measurement system that alerts aircraft operators to potential structural failures of any portion of an aircraft system during flight. The system senses high-frequency acoustic emissions from micro-cracks in the structure and alerts the crew by displaying the location of the potential failure.

"This early alert system has enormous potential for the safety of aircraft systems," said Jack Lin, CEO and President of NTS. "NTS will test the fiber optic system in our Saugus, CA, Structural Testing Facilities Laboratory and will participate with IOS in the commercialization and marketing of the products once they are proven under the test program."

IOS President and CEO Reuben Sandler added, "This device has the potential of being installed on all commercial aircraft."
