Virtual cockpit technology
-
The U.S. Army's Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) in
Fort Eustis, VA, has awarded Microvision, Inc. a $7.8 million contract modification for its continued work on the Virtual Cockpit Optimization Program (VCOP) and the Aircrew Integrated Helmet System. The additional funding is a follow-on to a Phase III SBIR development under which Microvision teamed with Boeing Phantom Works to develop high-performance helmet-mounted display (HMD) systems and vehicle interface technology for use in military rotorcraft. Microvision will continue to act as prime contractor during the next phase of development, with a $1.2 million subcontract to Boeing. The Army is planning to demonstrate the virtual cockpit system featuring Microvision's color HMD, with software developed by Boeing and the Rotorcraft Pilots Association. The additional $7.8 million effort will coordinate the two parallel developments under a single contract to maximize synergy between the two projects and ensure a "platform" approach to the advanced display system design.
Potential sales targets for an advanced pilot-worn display system include a variety of rotorcraft in the Army's proposed helicopter-modernization plan. According to the company, the U.S. Army reported that it is committed to supporting the transformation process and modernization plan for its rotorcraft fleet. The 20-year
plan includes the delivery of 1213 high-performance Comanche helicopters as well as upgrades to three other helicopters in the force: the AH-64D "Longbow" Apache, the UH-60 and EH-60 Light Utility helicopters, and updated models of the Boeing CH-47 heavy lift choppers.
