NAIAS Highlights: Concepts

Pack-and-go Gearbox

The long-haul trips travelers made atop dusty stagecoaches inspired the designers who created the Isuzu GBX concept sport utility vehicle that is based on a stretched-wheelbase Rodeo.

An exoskeletal frame provides the vehicle's backbone and eliminates the need for B-pillars. A production version would likely have an exoskeletal structure made via hydroforming. On the GBX, the frame also doubles as an integrated roof rack.

By twisting the rear door handle, a power-articulated step rail flips down and an otherwise hidden trailer hitch, which can be manually pulled forward for use, is revealed. A twist of a side door handle automatically flips down a step-rail that can support the weight of someone entering the vehicle for a front-, second-, or third-row seat.

The GBX rides on 21-in alloy wheels and Goodyear run-flat tires. The interior of the tailgate has various storage zones, including pull down units with divided trays. An overhead switch, positioned above front-seat occupants, operates the power sliding canvas roof that shields the third-row, "suitcase-style" removable seats. External framed first- and second-row seats are cantilevered from the center console to permit under-seat storage. Waterproof floor and seat materials allow for water cleanings.

Dash-stowed rpm and mph gauges - mounted on Plexiglas - are power-activated to pop up and swivel toward the driver. "With the gauges located in the center dash, it's easy to go to left- or right-hand drive," said Simon Yu, a Designer representing Isuzu Motors America. The instrument panel structure doubles as a housing for the fuel and temperature gauges. An exposed vent duct follows the contours of the center floor console until tapering into a heat/cool air passageway for second-row passengers. Flanking the rearview mirror are detachable flashlights that double as map lights.

The GBX's 3.0-L turbodiesel V6 engine with DOHC, 24 valves, and direct injection is mated to a four-speed automatic with low range. Front suspension is independent double-wishbone with torsion bar, while rear suspension is five-link with coil springs.
