NAIAS Highlights: Concepts

Infiniti's luxury crossover concept

The Infiniti FX45 blends an all-wheel-drive sport utility vehicle with performance to create a luxury crossover concept. The vehicle, which made its world debut in Detroit, reveals a glimpse into the automaker's future product direction.

Powering the FX45 is a 32-valve, 4.5-L, DOHC V8 that produces more than 224 kW (300 hp) and 407 N•m (300 lb•ft). The engine mates to a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with a manual mode. The SUV features an All-Mode driveline, adapted from the system found in the Nissan Skyline GT-R performance sedan. A Vehicular Control System, which controls brake pressure and engine torque in over/understeer conditions, is also part of the performance equation.

The FX45 features four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel antilock disc brakes. Braking stability is enhanced with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (which distributes braking force depending on vehicle load) and Brake Assist System (which aids the driver in panic braking situations).

Interior treatments include a 9.5-in LCD monitor that provides functions for the advanced navigation system, HVAC controls, audio controls, Infiniti Communicator, Internet, and e-mail access. Rear-seat passengers can tap into entertainment items such as a DVD player and a video game system.

The FX45 was designed at the Nissan Technical Center in Atsugi, Japan.
