NAIAS Highlights: Production
BMW's high-performance SUV and convertible
BMW's third-generation M3 convertible, which debuted at the NAIAS, is identical to the M3 coupe from the front end to A-pillar. The M3 convertible receives power from a six-cylinder engine producing 248 kW (333 hp) and 355 Nm (262 lbft) - increases of 69 kW (93 hp) and 35 Nm (26 lbft) from the previous engine. BMW's M3 convertible has a fully automatic soft top that also can be lowered from a remote control unit. (The previous M3 convertible was available through 1999.)
BMW also unveiled the X5 HP. As a high-performance edition to the X5 sports activity vehicle, the X5 HP's extra-powered V8 engine delivers 259 kW (347 hp) and 480 Nm (354 lbft) of torque (European ratings). To translate the new power, the five-speed Steptronic automatic transmission features a modified sport mode. The car makes its production debut this autumn.
