NAIAS Highlights: Production
Third-generation Infiniti Q45
Infiniti's flagship sedan gains new attributes in its 2002 incarnation. Changes over the previous version include an improved engine, an altered suspension, and safety gains.
The new engine is smaller but more powerful than the previous generation engine. A 4.5-L V8 - designed specifically for the Q45 - produces 254 kW (340 hp) at 6400 rpm and 451 Nm (333 lbft) at 4000 rpm. The previous engine was a 4.1-L V8 that produced 198 kW (266 hp) and 377 Nm (278 lbft). The five-speed automatic is 22 kg (48 lb) lighter than the four-speed transmission it replaces even though it uses an additional planetary gear set and clutch pack.
The Q45's four-wheel independent suspension was redesigned and features MacPherson struts with isolated subframe in front and a completely new multilink in the rear.
When equipped with a rearview monitor system featuring a wide-angle camera, the LCD screen can provide a view of what is directly behind the car. The system, new to the Q45, operates when reverse gear is selected.
Infiniti's first-ever voice-recognition system, developed with second-generation Visteon Voice Technology, can be used to control the audio and HVAC systems and select navigation functions (the navigation system is DVD-driven).
