Porsche is adding to its Boxster range with the advent of the high performance Boxster S. It has been given a 3.2-L (195 in3) six cylinder engine producing 185 kW (252 hp) at 6250 rpm, 35 kW (48 hp) more than the regular 2.5-L (153 in3) Boxster. Torque also benefits substantially, rising from 245 to 305 Nm (181 to 225 ftlb) at 4500 rpm, with about 85% of the maximum figure available from 2000 rpm. Claimed performance figures for the S model include a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 5.9 seconds. Top speed is about 260 km/h (163 mph). The engine drives through a manual six-speed gearbox as standard, but a five speed Tiptronic will be optional. The unit gets Motronic ME 7.2 electronic management with an electronic accelerator pedal. Porsche has made extensive changes to the chassis and suspension with stiffer damper settings to cope with the added power.
Design changes to the exterior are minimal. It has distinctively different wheels compared to the standard car, there are twin exhaust tailpipes and titanium-colored front air inlets, and a Boxster S logo on the trunk lid. Interior detailing includes silver-grey colored dials for the instruments. The folding roof gets a headliner of cloth to reduce noise levels. A three-spoke leather-rimmed steering wheel is fitted, and the Boxster S has side airbags.
