Global Concepts (Part 1)
Chrysler Java
-
Chrysler chose the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show to reveal a design study of a compact car for Europe. It was the first time that Chrysler created a small concept car specifically with the European market in mind, although the company insists that it is just a design study and that there are no production plans. The Java concept was the responsibility of DaimlerChrysler's Pacifica Advanced Product Design Center in California. Powertrain, transaxle, and suspension are all European-based DaimlerChrysler components. Power is provided by a 1.4-L engine producing 60 kW (80 hp) and 130 Nom (95 lboft). Front suspension includes wishbones, MacPherson struts, double-tube shock absorbers, and a torsion bar stabilizer. At the rear are trailing links, with coil springs, single tube shock absorbers, and a torsion bar stabilizer. With an overall length of only 3770 mm (149 in), the car is said to have an interior package comparable to that of the considerably larger Chrysler PT Cruiser.
