Global Concepts (Part 2)
Subaru Fleet-X
-
The Fleet-X provides hints of Subaru's next-generation flagship, a position long vacant since the demise of the SVX. Subaru calls the Fleet-X a grand touring wagon. Its body is a composite of many materials, with a basic framework of steel and light alloy outer panels. Polycarbonate panes are used in the rear quarter windows and the tailgate window. Different colors identify different exterior materials. The Fleet-X is about 30% lighter than a comparable Legacy wagon, with fuel economy improved by 40%, according to Subaru. The car's engine is a quad-cam, 16-valve, opposed four-cylinder engine displacing 2.0 L. It is a four-cylinder version of Subaru's new lightweight, compact modular-engine family, with a 3.0-L flat-six version in serious consideration. The naturally aspirated engine produces 134 kW (180 hp) at 6800 rpm and 196 Nom (144 lboft) at 5600 rpm. The transmission is an electronically controlled four-speed automatic driving all wheels via the variable-torque-split system.
