Global Concepts (Part 2)
GMC Terradyne

Under Terradyne's tilt-forward full hood is the new Duramax 6.6-L four-valve-per-cylinder turbodiesel V8, which will be available on 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD/3500 Series pickups. The engine features a direct-injection common-rail fuel system and is mated to an Allison 1000 Series five-speed automatic transmission. QuadraSteer four-wheel steering is said to give the full-size truck small-vehicle agility. Tighter turns can be made at low speeds, and the system can enhance high-speed stability by compensating for factors such as wind turbulence from heavy trucks. Cross-drilled vented disc brakes provide extra cooling for greater capability, and Dynamic Rear Proportioning makes better use of the rear brakes by electronically modulating brake-line pressure. Interior and cargo space is maximized by raising the cab 51 mm (2 in), which allows it to clear key components and be moved 178 mm (7 in) forward. This cab-up-and-forward design allowed more interior space without adding to overall vehicle length, giving the Terradyne the seating comfort of an SUV and the cargo-carrying capability of a long box truck in the same amount of space as a traditional short-box extended cab. The vehicle has four powered doors that slide parallel to the sides of the vehicle, and the length of the pickup box can be extended from 1.8 to 2.4 m (6 to 8 ft).
