Global Concepts (Part 2)
Chevrolet SSR

The SSR (Super Sport Roadster) from Chevrolet combines the function and utility of a pickup with the performance of a roadster. The rear-drive vehicle is powered by a longitudinally mounted 6.0-L V8 engine sending drive to the rear 20-in wheels and tires. The SSR's front-end design draws on Chevrolets of the early 1950s, with a twin-cockpit theme from early Corvettes. The storage area between the seats is reconfigurable: it can stow away to provide seating for a third person or a child seat, or it can act as an armrest with cupholders. To create extra space on the bench seat, designers moved the automatic shifter from the floor to the steering wheel. Behind a dash-mounted panel door are controls for the HVAC, stereo, navigation system, weather-information access, and computer with Internet/e-mail capabilities. The SSR's most interesting feature is the power-operated, retractable hardtop. The two-piece top stows vertically between the seat and the rear bed.
