Global Concepts (Part 2)
Jaguar F-TYPE
-
With the F-TYPE concept, Jaguar designers set out to create a compact roadster evoking the spirit of the E-type. The concept is the most compact Jaguar sports car in more than 40 years. The design is 645 mm (25 in) shorter than the XKR and fulfills Jaguar's goal of equal weight distribution for good dynamic performance, which dictated both cockpit positioning and the long hood. Aerodynamic aids include a front splitter that moves automatically with increasing speed and a rear fixed diffuser tunnel-both to increase downforce. The headlamps employ an adaptation of the latest baroptic light guide technology in a multiple-element cluster. The compact rear lamps use light-emitting diodes. The interior draws its inspiration from the functional simplicity of the aluminum lightweight E-type specially built for racing in the early 1960s. The concept is designed to accept a range of powertrain options starting with the 179 kW (240 hp) AJ-V6 engine from the S-TYPE sedan, while a supercharged version with around 225 kW (300 hp) is a possibility. Automatic or manual transmissions would drive the rear wheels, while all-wheel drive is a production-feasible option.
