Global Concepts (Part 2)
Dodge Viper
-
More than a decade after the original Viper roadster concept was unveiled, Dodge took the wraps off a LeMans-inspired concept car. The Dodge Viper GTS/R keeps the spaceframe, aluminum suspension, 8.0-L aluminum V10 engine, and six-speed manual gearbox used in the current Viper. However, the engine is dry-sumped and delivers 373 kW (500 hp)-37 kW (50 hp) more than the standard Viper GTS engine. Torque is increased to 678 N/m (500 lb/ft). The concept is 89 mm (3.5 in) lower than the current GTS Coupe, though engineers have added 76 mm (3 in) to the wheelbase by moving the rear wheels back. Body details are designed for performance, with air management being dramatically improved by a larger grille opening, added integrated engine louvers, and a bigger NACA intake duct. An electronically adjustable front wind-splitter, large air diffuser in the rear, and large rear hoop spoiler with a cockpit-controlled wing enhance down force. The interior has a driver-focused instrument panel with toggle switches and vertically stacked custom engine gauges.
