VW ups the city car stakes

With the rear-engined up!, Volkswagen has made a step-change in city car design. The star of the Frankfurt Motor Show, the up! concept, which is expected to lead to a production model by 2010, is based on a completely new platform and drivetrain. The engine is a 1.2-L three-cylinder, but a two-cylinder is also being developed for the car, which measures 3.45 m (11.3 ft) long.
