Aluminum foam has safety value

NASCAR Nextel Cup Series racecars have utilized a Canadian company's stabilized aluminum foam (SAF) since 2002. The noncombustible material, which provides energy crash protection for onboard fuel storage, also bypassed the need for trunk well changes when the racecars went from 22.5-gal (85-L) to 13.5-gal (51-L) fuel tanks.
