Innovation rules SPE automotive plastics awards

The Society of Plastics Engineers' 37th annual Automotive Innovation Awards are the Oscars of the automotive plastics business. The competition for 2007 was "especially intense," noted program chair Brian Gosser, Automotive Business Manager for Samsung Chemical USA. As in years past, AEI was honored to participate on the Blue-Ribbon judging panel.

Audi R8 light in the rear

Audi's range-topping, mid-engined R8 sports car is not just about performance and aesthetics; precision-fit components and a high level of surface finish are also priorities. Among its prominent design features are two large air apertures at the rear. The rear bumper is a plastic-based, lightweight system that not only has to meet Audi's quality priorities but also to be sufficiently tough to resist damage caused in minor collisions.

Simplifying cockpit design

A new cockpit design called EcoSpace, said to offer a weight savings of more than 20% compared to traditional solutions while ensuring the same passenger protection, was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show by ThyssenKrupp Steel, ThyssenKrupp Presta, and Johnson Controls. Other benefits listed include improvements to functional integration and structural properties.
