Carbon fiber

A four-color brochure from Conoco Inc. describes the company's new carbon-fiber technology. It uses higher-performance mesophase, which means "liquid crystal," and the ordered molecular structure of that liquid crystal, fossilized in fiber form, yields fibers with significantly higher performance than the isotropic pitch fibers currently available. Fibers from mesophase pitch have a property profile that make them more easily customized, so that they can provide greater moduli than polyacrylonitrile fibers. They also offer intrinsically greater electrochemical purity and higher ionic intercalation.
