Tool turns nonround objects

ETREMA Products' Pulse-turn is a machine tool for turning nonround objects such as pistons used in internal combustion engines. The tool's actuation system, which can be mounted to any standard CNC lathe's cross-slide, is powered by ETREMA's Terfenol-D, a magnetostrictive metal crystal that changes shape in proportion to the strength of a magnetic field surrounding it. The unit consists of an actuator carrying the cutting tool, a power amplifier, and a computer-based control system that senses spindle speed and position and combines the information with piston shape requirements for both circularity and profile.
