As conventional torque converter-based automatic transmission design and engineering advance steadily due to the use of software control and the advent of six-speed systems, the challenge for companies trying to interest OEMs in something very different becomes difficult. ZF's six-speed automatic is now achieving increasingly wide use in executive cars, including those of Jaguar and BMW, and robotized manual systems are starting to show the level of improvement and refinement necessary to make them acceptable in terms of driveability and smoothness. Torotrak, which has been involved in the design and development of an infinitely variable transmission (IVT) for 15 years, knows just how difficult it is to break new ground on OEM thinking in this area, but it has recently been demonstrating its latest Series-3 system to potential users or manufacturers in the U.S., Europe, and Far East.
