Aluminum driveshafts offer weight savings
Spicer Lite aluminum driveshafts from the Spicer Div. of Dana Corp. (www.dana.com) feature a high-speed compact
design and are 40% lighter than steel for improved fuel economy and performance. They also
have less rotating mass than steel driveshafts. This, in turn, results in a better
balanced shaft that reduces drivetrain vibration, particularly at high engine rpm and high
road speed. They also provide higher powertrain bending stiffness for smoother operation
and reduced noise vibration and harshness as compared to steel. The driveshafts are used
on all IROC vehicles. Alternative driveshaft assembly packages are available with aluminum
sleeves and midship splines, yoke shafts and tube sleeves, reverse slip applications,
swaged tubing, cardan and constant velocity joints, and rubber coupling devices.
